What are rowing machines? What are the benefits?

WHAT IS A ROWING MACHINE?

A rowing machine is a specialized piece of fitness equipment. It is designed to allow the user to imitate the motion and benefits of water rowing. All gyms will have at least one rower as it is a very popular choice for those wanting to work out their muscles and heart, but don’t necessarily like to run or cycle. If you have ever heard someone referring to the “erg” at a gym, they are referring to the rower, as they are more technically referred to as “ergometers”.

HOW IS IT USED?

The user will sit on the padded seat, place their feet in the footrests and strap the feet in place, then take hold of the handle. They will then use the muscles in their legs to push off until the legs are straight. They will then pull the handles towards their chest, bending their arms. The knees will then bend again, taking the user back to the starting position.

Remember to:
- Keep your back straight and not curved or bent
- Engage your core to stabilize your back and keep your spine safe
- Don’t try to cheat the movement, complete each step

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ROWING?

Like any safe physical exercise, rowing is a fantastic way to achieve real results as you embark on your fitness and health journey.

Muscle toning
A rower is a resistance machine. Basically, this means that your body is having to pull against something in order to move it and to compete for the correct motion. Because this makes our muscles work, tear and eventually rebuild stronger, it means that ultimately, the muscles become stronger and more toned.

What muscles does the rower target? Almost all of them? But these are the main ones:
- Triceps
- Deltoids
- Quadriceps
- Glutes
- Hamstrings

Weight loss

This one may seem obvious, but it’s a great reason to row. Rowing burns a lot of calories due to the mix of muscular and cardiovascular work. To lose weight, it is essential to consume fewer calories that you use, so rowing can really help to burn up those calories.

Cardiovascular fitness

The repetitive motion of rowing, especially at a fast speed, really gets the heart rate up. Raising the heart rate and maintaining that level during a workout really helps to strengthen the heart and raise cardiovascular fitness. This is a great way of cutting chances of heart disease as we age.

Easy on joints

Rowing is a great choice for those with rickety knees or ankles. The motion does not require any slamming, pounding or heavy impact, as the motion is more about pushing than lifting and dropping the feet. Although of course, if pain is experienced when using the rower, or any fitness equipment, stop and get it see to.

Versatile

One of the great benefits of rowing machines is that they offer the opportunity to simulate a popular sport, without the hassle or cost of actually finding a rowing club and getting out on the water. With a rowing machine, you can reap the benefits of the motion, in the comfort and safety of the indoors, away from the elements and weather. It is fairly simple to hire a rowing machine, so you can even enjoy the burn in your own home!
